Our level of happiness largely depends on the things that are going around in our heads. Unfortunately, a lot of us tend to dwell on the dark side and start thinking way too many negative thoughts. This is important. Your thoughts can make or break your day. It’s time to drop the bad, the unnecessary and the toxic so we can all enjoy life. Why let a few thoughts decide how good our day is?
Here are 15 things to stop thinking about so you can be happy:
1) What he or she said
Did somebody just say something that hit you in the nerves? Be it an insult, a subtle put down or plain sarcasm, stop rerunning it over and over in your head. It’s not worth it. Besides, you shouldn’t take it personally. It could be nothing.
2) The stresses of work
Go to work. Play your part. Do your job well. When you punch out, leave everything else at the office. It’s time to enjoy your day. Stop thinking about work and focus on your own life already. You are not your job.
3) Something bad that happened in the past
I know this is a very “easier said than done” point, but it’s true, we need to let go of the past and start focusing on the present. If you think about it, the past does not exist anymore and thinking about it would never produce anything worthwhile for you or your life. So do what it takes to let it go. If you feel you need therapy, just go for it.
4) The future
Speaking of time, we shouldn’t waste too many thoughts for the future by piling up a bunch of expectations. Lower them! If they’re too high, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment ONLY. Besides, it’s more fun this way. When you drop the expectations, the surprises would feel more amazing.
5) The breakup
Breakups hurt, but you’ll be fine. Give yourself your time to heal. Give yourself the chance to experience love again. You can’t get any of those if you’re constantly thinking of the broken relationship.
6) The fear of being alone
That being said, stop thinking that you’ll end up alone. I believe this idea would be related to issues like social anxiety and lack of confidence. But drop it! No one will ever truly be alone. There’re just way too many people out there. Do what it takes to expand your social circle and start meeting people!
7) Angry and destructive scenarios
Picture this: Somebody treats you unfairly and angers you deeply. You then spend precious minutes thinking up scenarios of how you’re going to exact revenge and mete out justice. But all of that is useless. It’s tiring and it hurts even. I know as I had to deal with anger issues before myself. Don’t waste your time with such angry thoughts. Take solace in the fact instead that you’re capable enough to let it go. That’s how real happiness comes.
8) Money
Money is important, but the deciding factor to how happy it makes us is whether we’re chasing it too much or not. Think about this: Money will never make you happy. It can only make your life easier. Whatever stage you are now in your life, ask yourself, will it ever be enough? Work hard. Do what it takes to survive. But realize there’s more to life than thinking about money.
9) The bad news you read this morning
As far as I’m concerned, the majority of news in our papers or social media feeds is plain negative. It may have caught your attention, but why let it ruin your day?
What happens in the world isn’t your fault. Just because something bad happened out there doesn’t mean it needs to make you become like them. So do what you can to always help others and make this world a better place.
10) The supposed success your friends are enjoying
You know how it is. Your friends seem to have it all. They’re working their swanky jobs with high salaries and driving nice cars. Some of them are even in love and getting married. They seem successful, but remember that success is individual. Stop thinking about others and comparing your life with others. Your path is unique only to you. You will be great.
11) That embarrassing thing you did
Well it may have been pretty embarrassing, but only a little! Laugh it off. Nobody has an agenda that’s based off your life. They probably forgot it sooner than you make it out to be. Heck, they’re probably having trouble with the last ten points!
12) Your supposed bad luck
You know, things like getting a parking ticket not once, but twice! And then you scream, “Why does this happen to me?!” as if you want to challenge the universe. Let’s not go too deep and talk about karma, cosmic forces or even the law of attraction. These things just happen! So drop it already! Be more careful next time and try not to let it happen again yeah? It’ll be good!
13) Why some people are just bad
This may be a bit hard to swallow, but yup, some people are just plain bad. You are not going to get the apology you deserve. You are not going to fully comprehend why some people act the way they do. Your kindness may be met with hostility even. Face it. You can’t change any of them. You can spend your time wondering why they are like that, but it’s going to be useless. So let them walk their path. You walk your own. They may come around one day and be your friend.
14) Why people change
To extend the last point, you’re also going to watch some friends change and take a self-destructive turn in their life. It’s just a fact of life. People change, and it may not be for the better. I say, let them be. You have to let them make their own mistakes so that they can grow and mature. You can’t expect them to live the way you want them to.
15) When your big “break” will come
We all struggle at certain points in our lives, and then we wonder when our big, milestone will arrive be it in the form of a promotion at work or perhaps being discovered by a talent scout. But thinking about it is useless. We ought to simply focus on the task at hand and keep working hard, every, single day! Besides, a big break doesn’t solve all your problems. We all face challenges throughout our lives. So just work hard and don’t give up.
